A severe dry spell in Karamoja characterized with fast blowing wind
fueling bush fires has left hundreds homeless in Napak district.
The incident happened 26 kilometres, South West of
Moroto town where over 40 families have been left homeless in the wave of fresh
fires that hit Louro village, Lomuno parish, Lotome Sub County.
According to Napak authorities the most affected are the
children and women who do not have food and bedding.
Joseph Lomonyang, the District Chairperson Napak, says the
cause of the fire outbreak is uncertain but is believed to have originated from
one of the settlements in the village and spread by a wild wind. He however,
says no life was lost in the afternoon blaze except property worth unspecified
cash.
Lomonyang asks the community to be responsible take serious
caution on while dealing with fire.
However, Lucia Nakiru, a victim says the wild fires arrived
when they were out hunting for wild berries for the family. She adds that she
is left with no beddings and house property after they perished in the fire.
She notes that her family is now sleeping in the cold.
